The new service integrates AT&T’s virtual private networking technology with IBM’s SmartCloud Enterprise+ product
AT&T and IBM has signed an agreement to jointly develop a secure network-enabled cloud service that uses private networks rather than the public Internet.
Under the agreement AT&T's virtual private networking technology will be combined IBM's SmartCloud Enterprise+ product to create a faster and secure shared cloud service.
The new technology integrates the security protections of both the products, allowing customers to shift information or applications between their own data centres (private clouds) and the new cloud service.
AT&T Business Solutions CEO Andy Geisse said the new network-enabled cloud service combines the security and speed of AT&T's global network with the control and management capabilities of IBM's enterprise cloud.
"This new service gives companies yet another way to innovate, create new value, and transform their businesses and industries," Geisse said.
AT&T's virtual private networking technology allocates networking resources to computing resources, automating functions that are often performed manually.
It also allows the network and compute resources to scale or contract in order to support the fluctuating demand on systems.
IBM SmartCloud Enterprise+ is an IBM Infrastructure-as-a-Service optimised for mission-critical, enterprise workloads. It offers choice of dedicated physical servers and storage and also adds the scalable flexibility of a public cloud.
Customers using the new service will have access to IBM SmartCloud Enterprise+' s secure managed services and be able to run processes in both public and private cloud models.
Other features of the new cloud service include customisation options to meet customer needs, service-level agreements (SLAs) aligned to business and usage requirements, over 70 automated built-in security functions and security extended to wired and wireless devices which are authenticated to the customer's virtual private network.
